Sometimes, I wish I could travel back to when my husband and I first started our journey. If this was possible, I would visit the young bride of 23, hand her a letter, and tell her to read it and keep it close to her heart. The letter would read like this……
Dear Sister in Christ,
This letter contains words of wisdom that I wish I would have know 20 years ago about marriage and motherhood. What a wonderful journey you have ahead of you………you are about to write the first pages of your legacy that you will leave for your friends and family. In this letter I want to offer you some foresight that will help make your journey a little easier.
1. Put God first, in all that you do. Remember your wedding verse, Ecclesiastes 4:12 “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” When your marriage is based on the Lord, there is nothing that you and your husband can not overcome.
2. Follow God’s guidance on love, found in 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8, ” 4 Love is patient, J)’> 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, L)’> it keeps no record of wrongs. N)’> but rejoices with the truth. A)’> who can find?” She is worth far more than rubies.” The highest calling a woman can have is it to be that of a wife and mother. Treat it as sacred. Work at your job as if you were doing it for the Lord.
5. You and your husband will face many good times and trials alike as you grow in your marriage, the best piece of advice I can give you is to trust God. Make yourself familiar with the old favorite hymn, “Tor trust and obey, for there is no other way to be happy in Jesus, then to trust and obey.” Go to the Lord in prayer, He will never leave you nor forsake you.
In the years to come when God blesses you with precious children and you hear the word mama for the first time, you’ll want to listen to the words I will share with about motherhood. This comes from a mother who has walked the road you will soon travel on.
