Empty it sits. A shell of what it was.
As I open the door, I’m taken back in time. I walk through the crowded hallway, merging this way and that, past students that are full of life and energy. Up and to my right I glance and see the pictures of graduates, lining the halls. How I long to have my picture on that wall one day soon. I hurriedly run to the end of the hall and reach into my yellow painted locker, grab my books and slam the metal door with it ‘s sound reverberating behind me.
I look towards my left and see Coach Stinson working away in his office preparing for the big game later that evening. Around the corner I turn, almost running into Mr. Welham, dressed in his finest, wearing his tan corduroy blazer with a huge grin across his face. He whistles his happy tune and walks down the end of the hall, with his favorite coffee cup in hand, where I will meet him later in the afternoon for Spanish.
The bell rings at a deafening pitch as the students laughter moves past me and into the green and gold gym that seems so massive in size. I can hear them chanting away, “Go Crusaders! Win Crusaders!”
My eyes blink and twenty five years later I stand in the same halls that are now empty. How did the time slip away so fast? Wasn’t I just here? The classrooms are now empty. The sound of my voice echos off the barren walls. The desks, the teachers voices, are ghosts from a time long ago. Who knows what will become of this place I called home for six years.
No more students and no more laughter embrace the shell of the past. The hopes of the future have moved into a new vision, birthed into reality. The birthing pains were not easy, but they were will worth it. It took prayer, listening to God’s voice, and sacrifice. By God’s faithful hand the school books are now pristine, the walls smell of fresh paint, the pencils are sharpened. Ready. Ready to great the new dreamers, that will grow and learn about His goodness, and fill it’s untrodden halls.

Great image. I have been back to my elementary school to share in my teachers classroom and it seemed so strange. So small.
🙂
Love the tattered Bible at the top!
That is a beautifully written description of a memory. Thanks for sharing.
Those school years leave such an imprint, and the teachers have the capability to leave a rich legacy that reverberates through the years.
Your description brings back memories of my small and rural elementary school, where we had just one class of each grade, no kindergarten, and no more than 28 kids per class.
I love your memory, truly a gift! Thank you for linking up for Faith Filled Friday. 🙂
