For our family Friday school happens for eight weeks during the fall and eight weeks during the winter. During these time periods we meet with other homeschooling families at a local church on Friday’s from 8:30-3:30. The children are able to take various classes that the parents have agreed to teach. We begin the morning with chapel, then they move onto their classes. Daniel’s first class of the morning is Manners and Etiquette, then he moves onto Art, Spanish and then lunch. His fourth class is in the afternoon were all the younger kids meet together and learn about different topics, the past two weeks they have learned about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.
Emily has a total of four classes plus other areas that she helps in. After the morning chapel session Emily, as well as the other kids her age are responsible for being student helpers in the younger children’s classrooms. Last week she helped in the toddler room. This was a special treat for her as she loves children this age, and they seem to bond really well with her also. We saw this happen last Friday as one toddler, whose name was Mary Grace begged Emily to, “No go, No go” when it was time for Emily to move on to her next hour. Emily’s next class is Bible and then lunch. After lunch she moves onto chapel for the older grades, Spanish, Art and finally her Life Skills class.
Mom and Dad are also busy during these times helping out in classes that they have been assigned to. I am especially proud of my husband Bill because he has taken it upon himself to teach Washington state history to the highschoolers. He really loves history and is doing a great job at this class.
Friday school is a great time for all the families involved. Every step of the way the leader of our Friday school, Jeff Irish, always focuses on making sure that God is glorified in everything that we do and making sure that we are going in the direction God would want our co-op to go in. We are really looking forward to being part of it again next year.
