Today we will be discussing chapters 3 & 4 of the book “The Power of a Praying Parent”, by Stormie Omartian. The topics that are covered in these chapters are, securing protection from harm, and helping our children to feel loved and accepted.
Prayer changes things. When we call on the most High, through faith, and in accordance with His will, anything is possible. What seems like momentous mountains have the power to be moved, when we cry out to Him with the deepest longings of our hearts. We need to make sure that we never neglect to come to Him in prayer, especially in the area of our children’s safety and feelings of self worth.
It is so important to pray for our children’s safety. So much can happen in today’s scary world, it seems as if another act of violence towards one of God precious children is heard of everyday on the news. We as parents have the power to change destinies when we give the Lord our concerns and pray over the safety of our children.
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, the flames will not set you ablaze.” Isaiah 43:2
I found this to be true in the life of my family this past week. As I was reading this chapter of praying for safety over our children’s lives, I began to pray to the Lord that He would grant safety over my family, and that is exactly what He did.
My husband and son left our house to get something for dinner. They were stopped at a stop light waiting for it to turn green. Just as it was about to turn, my husband heard a large bang coming from behind him. A truck a few cars behind him was not paying attention to the light and started to go, clipping the car behind my husband. This truck lost control, passed my husband and did a 180* between my husband’s can and the car in front of him and he ended up facing the opposite direction of traffic. For some reason right when the light changed the Lord kept my husband from putting his foot on the gas and moving forward, saving my husband and son from totaling the car, and keeping both of them safe. Prayer make a difference friends!
“Things happen when we pray that will not happen when we don’t. What might happen, or might not happen, to our children if we don’t pray today? Let’s not wait to find out. Let’s get on our knees now.” ~ Stormie Omartian
It can be so easy for children to be swayed by the pressures of today’s society. Feelings of being unworthy, not good enough, or not being able to fit in, surround them every where they go. In order to provide a shield against these tactics that the enemy tries to use, our precious gifts from God need to have a foundation that they can stand on that’s filled with love. Children need to understand the truths of God’s love and our love for them, it’s the building blocks on which their character is built.
We as parents need to take a stand in raising our children. We must not be swayed by feelings of inadequacy from our past. We need to start today to be the parent God wants us to be. We need to shower our children with an everlasting love, so they can rest easy in knowing they are secure and cared for. We also need to guide them in their relationships with the Savior so they may also know that His love for them is never ending. These factors will help them to move forward in their lives with confidence and security.
God wants this and so much more for our children. We are His own. He will not fail us when we parent our children with God at the helm of everything we do.
“For you are a holy people to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.” Deuteronomy 7:6

I’m in total agreement that “Prayer changes the outcome of our children’s lives.” My kids are grown now, and my prayers are even more fervent for them. I’ve added a child to my prayers, and that’s my son’s wife – although I’ve been praying for the spouses of my children since they were little. Now we know Alisane (Alex’s wife) – we have yet to meet our daughter’s future spouse. I feel so strongly that a mother’s prayer (and father’s) can make a difference. I’ve seen it – and experienced it. (I’m using Stormie’s “The Power of Praying for your Adult Children) 🙂
Thank you for the opportunity to connect with others – it’s a gift to be able to read and learn.
