Keep Your Eyes on God

Focus

As I was reading my Bible yesterday, the Lord spoke to me about where my focus should be. In Matthew 14:29-31 it states,

29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30  But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”  31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

God said to me, “Why aren’t you focusing on me?  “What are you teaching your children?”

This is something I have to work at daily, putting my focus in the right place.  When Peter took his eyes off of Jesus and onto his fears, he started to sink. It’s so easy for us to do the same thing. When the every day winds of life smack us hard in the face, we often get off course.

God wants us to take our eyes off our problems and onto Him,  and the blessings of the here and now. Choosing to ignore God’s desire, for us to trust in His goodness, sets and example for our children as well.  Our actions…our words…  they matter….. to young watching eyes.  It’s so important to show our children how to adjust their vision to be on Him alone. We need to teach them, to not doubt that God will always take care of them. We need to let them know that trusting God makes all the difference.

Do you have problems with your focus? What have you learned over the years to keep your focus on Christ alone?

I like the picture as well as your blog, Shari. I just had this conversation with one of my boys – same passage! And I’m with you on the importance of modeling. That’s my forever growing area!! Thanks for sharing.

I love this, Shari. I want to keep my focus on God, so that my children learn by example to keep their focus on Him.

Problems with my focus? Goodness gracious, sometimes I feel like a bee in the biggest, most abundant flower garden in the world. Must go here! No, here! No, over there!
    Whew.

I find that the more I remember to follow my prayers with sitting still quiet time during which I listen, not fidget, not starting to rattle off my to-do list, that my day flows more smoothly, that I stay on the path more than I fall down. When I do fall down, I must remember to reach for Him as opposed to just saying “Self! Self! I can do it myself!” 🙂

    Hi Shari,
I just read your comment on Amy Sullivan’s blog. And see your blog on the Soli Sisters.

My hometown is also the town of Bing Crosby. I live in Chicago now, but my entire family lives in Spokane. So I wanted to pop over and say hi.

    Fondly,
    Glenda

Trusting God most certainly makes all the difference! Teaching our children this very foundational truth sets them up for thriving spiritual health! Thanks for the encouragement!
