I am so happy that Christmas time is here! I love decorating the house, listening to Christmas music and spending time with my family. Each Christmas throughout the years has been special, creating unique memories that always make me smile.
On one Christmas I can remember firemen driving through our neighborhood, with their lights flashing and sirens blaring. Santa was being pulled behind the firetruck, on a trailer decorated with Christmas lights shining brightly. I was about 6 years old and I ran outside to sit on Santa’s lap and tell him what I wanted for Christmas. When I came back inside my mother asked what I had asked Santa for, I told her, “a new watch to call my own.” I was so happy when I woke up on Christmas morning and found my watch from Santa underneath the tree. I thought I was the luckiest girl in the world.
As the years have past and I now have children of my own, I have some favorite memories that stand out above the rest. Those memories are the times spent putting Christ in Christmas. Every Sunday night we light Advent candles, read what each candle symbolizes and scripture to go along with it. Then my husband reads a story from the book, The Candle in the Forest and other Christmas Stories Children Love, comprised of various authors. On Christmas Eve, we have a birthday party for Jesus and read Luke 2:1-20 which tells about the birth of Jesus.
All of these memories are such a blessing to me and something I will always cherish.

My favorite Christmas Memory is the year it didn’t snow. So we used the sleds inside for a marble game and scooted little cars around the plastic sleds. Singing carols around the piano was also fun. If you got a “Grandma basket” you were approved and made it as a member of the family. Granny shopped at the drugstore and got useful gifts: envelopes, cologne, deodorant and socks. You pretty much knew ahead of time the gift would be so practical.

I would have loved to see Santa pulled by a firetruck, that is such a great memory! My favorite memories have been of waking up on Christmas morning, to find the kids sitting in the middle of the floor staring at the stuff sticking out of their stockings. LOL! Have a great week!

My Dad is a dairyman and I remember that we always had to wait for him to finish with the morning milking, cleaning the barn, and making his way back in the house, (there was ALWAYS that “one more thing” to do) before we could “do” Christmas morning.
My favorite Christmas memory with my own children (3 daughters) is how every year after we put out our Nativity Scene, my middle daughter would “swipe” the Baby Jesus and hide him. (he wasn’t born yet Mom!) And them sometime between Christmas Eve and Day, he would be returned to his perfect place in the manger! The first time she did it, I didn’t even notice at first. Then it just became her tradition.

Kathleen,
What wonderful memories. Your daughter was right, it sounded like she started a very special tradition!

The Christmas of 1982is the best Christmas, to date that our family has had. On November, 17, 1982 my sister who then was 31/2 years old had surgery to remove a malignant brain tumor. The hospital where she had the surgery at is 2 hours from our house. My mom stayed down there with her. On Christmas eve my Grandmother had told my brother and I that my dad went to get us a Christmas present. A few hours later he pulled in the driveway with my mom and sister in the truck. Although my sister had to go back to the hospital the day after Christmas and our parents didn’t have very much money for presents that year. He was laid of from his job. It was the best Christmas because we were there all together for it.

My favorite memory is my Papaw, who was a preacher, reading us the Christmas story and it taking 45 minutes to get through it. He would get so excited and emotional about it that he would have to preach in between verses. He would have us shout “Jesus” when he got excited and we would all giggle. I sure do miss that wonderful man and will always cherish that memory 🙂
