It’s a wonderful book that is a MUST HAVE for all parents.
Last week we discussed a legacy of service inside the home. This week we will discuss a legacy of service within the community. One of the most important legacies I want my children to inherit from me is a legacy of service to others. Many years ago, God gave me a heart to help the poor and underprivileged. I spent 11 years of my life working as a social worker to help the homeless community. These individuals could easily be you or me, depending upon a change of circumstances within our lives.
As I looked for a picture to go along with this post, I found the one above. My spirit breaks for people in this situation. The caption below this picture read, “Very old homeless woman after I gave her money and told her she’s beautiful.” This is the heart I want my children to develop. I want them to see with new eyes the beauty in the least of these. I want them to know, just as the Bible states, when we help individuals in this situation we are helping our Father as well.
“The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew 25:40
It’s my desire that when I help people in these circumstances, both the people who are helped, and my children, might see Jesus inside me and see that there is a God who loves them more than they could imagine. There are many opportunities within the community where you can challenge your children to grow in this area. Soup kitchens, shelters, food banks, clothing banks, meals on wheels, or the elderly in nursing homes. God’s word commands us to reach out and help those in need.
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.” Matthew 25:35
I challenge you friends to think outside the box, and go outside your comfort zone to lend a helping hand to those who are crying out to be loved. Ingrain upon your children’s hearts that people need to see the light of Jesus through every aspect of their lives.
Now it’s time for a link up party !
The purpose of Leaving A Legacy is three fold. It’s mission is to challenge it’s readers to work on leaving Godly legacies for their children, to be a place of encouragement for its readers, as well as sharing my journey as a cancer survivor. You can link up your posts that deal with leaving a legacy and ones that offer encouragement to the community.
This link up will be happening every Thursday at Leaving a Legacy. Please tell your friends, and join us on this journey of leaving a Godly legacy for future generations!
- To link up go to the sidebar and get the code for the Legacy Leaver Thursdays button, right click and “save as” on the code and then upload it into your post. Or you can provide a direct link somewhere in your post linking back here. That way other bloggers can join in too!
- Then copy and paste the direct link from your post, (not your blog url), into the linky tool below.
- In order to create an encouraging community here, please take a moment to visit the person in front of you. As time permits, I will read as many of your posts as possible throughout the week. Thank you!
For those of you that link up throughout the month, I will be choosing a “featured blogger”, for the following month. The featured blogger will be someone who actively participates in the link up, and who’s posts have really touched the community. They will receive free advertising for their blog on my sidebar for that month, and also be allowed to submit one approved guest post during that month.
The featured blogger for August is Deidra from The Middle – Daily Devotion Blog.
She has a way of writing that will really challenge you and grow your spirit. Please take a moment to stop by and visit her wonderful blog.

“I want them to see with new eyes the beauty in the least of these.” Me too! Beautiful post, Shari
Great thoughts, Shari. Jesus went to the “least of these” and so should we!
Beautiful sheltering. Certainly a legacy to leave our children.
It’s definitely outside the comfort zone, to reach out to people in need, but there are SO many blessings when we do. And God is so glorified! Thank you Shari 🙂
Beautiful.
I LOVE that picture, and I LOVE to see God’s work in your heart and the way it is pouring into your children!

Beautiful post, Shari. I want to serve those who are less fortunate. As you said, one change of circumstances and it could easily be us in that situation. Thank you for your passion for the homeless!
Oh Shari – I love your servant’s heart. No doubt you are leaving a legacy…not just “talking the talk” but walking the walk.
I noticed you are a cancer survivor. My husband is also – he is now nineteen years cancer free. We praise God for his healing.
Blessings,
Joan
